What's Up Presented by Jeff Dutton
Stellar Navigation Presented by Tim Claydon
Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered, is that a star or a planet? Is that moving point of light the International Space Station or just another piece of space junk? What about that grouping of stars in the North, is that the Big Dipper? Fortunately, we have technology on our side! We live in a connected world, where smartphones and tablets are all too commonplace. But did you know those smart-devices can also be used as powerful stellar navigation tools? With features like wireless access to the internet, GPS chips, digital compasses, and augmented reality, your phone becomes a personal window on our galaxy and far, far beyond! In our presentation, we will cover the basics of stellar navigation using software and digital devices, and look at how these can be used to learn about the night skies wonders! We will take you on a journey through different wavelengths of light to explore hidden treasures. We also look at how amateurs can get involved in Citizen Science projects to help contribute to real scientific understanding, and obtain access to vast collections of astronomical resources, and communities.
A handout with a list of resources and web links covered in the presentation will be provided. The targets in the What's Up presentation will be covered by using software and some of the 'apps' discussed.
The DRAA is for everyone from beginners to advanced amateurs, the club caters to all levels. - Monthly Meetings - Workshops - Dark Sky Site - And much more Still not sure? Find out more!
