The Astrometry.net Project: Automatic Identification of Astronomical Images Presented by Dustin Lang, Ph.D candidate, University of Toronto, Department of Computer Science.
The Astrometry.net project is building a "blind astrometry engine": a computer program that takes an astronomical image as input and tells you where the telescope was pointing - using no information other than the pixels in the image. We have achieved this feat by combining computer vision techniques with huge astronomy datasets to build an "index of the sky". Once we have determined which stars are contained in an image, we can annotate your image, drawing the constellations and identifying interesting objects such as nebulae. We can also show you images that other people - amateur and professional astronomers alike - have taken of the same part of the sky. We hope this will help organize, annotate and make searchable all the world's astronomical information, and increase the flow of images, knowledge and enthusiasm among and between the professional and amateur astronomy communities.
