Colliding Galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
Dave Patton, Assistant Professor, Trent University, Department of Physics
The collision of two galaxies can be a truly spectacular event. In the process of merging two galaxies into one, galaxy collisions can also trigger the formation of new generations of stars, and provide fuel for black holes lurking at the centres of each galaxy. This talk will begin with an overview of galaxy collisions, highlighted by images and simulations of nearby colliding galaxies. The remainder of the talk will focus on ongoing studies of colliding galaxies being carried out at Trent University, using the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
