About fifty years ago, prominant astrophysists argued if black holes even existed. But over the past few decades, astronomers have found strong evidence for black holes, and, in fact, today we hypothesize that supermassive black holes sit at the center of almost every galaxy. In this talk, I'll briefly trace the history of the theory of black holes and explain how supermassive black holes (with masses more than a million solar masses); have been identified. I'll then outline what we know about their growth, and the role they play in the evolution of galaxies. In particular, I'll concentrate on explaining the theory of black holes caught in the act of feeding in the extraordinarily luminous galaxies known as quasars.
